Abstract

The consequences of administrative reform for the management of the nature reserve fund (NRF) in the Kharkiv region, Ukraine, are examined. The study aims to identify territorial communities with a complete absence of NRF sites and assess their conservation potential. The methodology was based on a GIS analysis of data from the State Cadastre of NRF and the administrative boundaries of the communities. Seven communities (12.5% of the total) were found to have no protected sites (N=0), covering a total area of 7.7 thousand ha. The potential for developing the NRF network in these communities lies in establishing a local network of small-scale protected areas (nature monuments, wildlife sanctuaries) and integrating valuable landscape elements (gully systems, river floodplains, green-blue infrastructure objects) into the regional ecological network.
