The article examines the emergence and methodological potential of digital demography as an interdisciplinary field for studying population processes in the context of the limitations inherent in traditional demographic statistics. The relevance of the topic is обусловлена global digitalization, the intensification of migration flows, and crisis conditions under which the conduct of classical population censuses becomes impossible or significantly constrained. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of changes in the ethnic composition of the population, which traditionally remains insufficiently reflected in administrative registers and official statistics. The study analyzes the possibilities of using open digital data, including social media, search queries, and geolocation information, to identify linguistic, cultural, and migration patterns that can serve as proxy indicators of ethnic affiliation. The advantages of digital traces over traditional censuses are substantiated, notably their continuity, high spatio-temporal resolution, and capacity to capture dynamic processes in real time. At the same time, the key limitations of digital demography are outlined, including sample non-representativeness, algorithmic biases, and ethical risks associated with the use of personalized data. The necessity of applying hybrid methodological approaches that combine big data analysis with traditional statistical sources for the calibration of results is emphasized. It is concluded that under conditions of critically outdated demographic information, digital demography can be regarded as a promising tool for the reconstruction and monitoring of changes in the ethnic composition of the population, particularly in the contemporary Ukrainian context. |
