| Abstract: | Ergative verbs of Modern English are singled out as a class on the basis of two features: they build up an ergative model of the sentence and their semantic structure contains two meanings belonging to causative— noncausative/decausative opposition. The elements of the field of ergativity constitute 5 types of paradigms: lexical (all the ergative verbs), semantic-functional (ergative verbs and their analytical correlates), nominative (thematic groups), semantic (groups of synonyms and antonyms) and formal (forms of the verb). |
