The dynamics of spatial heterogeneity of the sod-lithogenic soils on gray-green clay in the environmental aspect has been studied in terms of hardness. The ecomorphic analysis of vegetation within the research area has been carried out. The ordination of data of soil hardness has been conducted by non-metric multidimensional scaling. The three-dimensional variant of multidimensional scaling has been applied. The relationship between the variation of the hardness of the soil and environmental factors has been established using phytoindicative scales. Using the technique of spatial data analysis (PCNM) we have singled out the elements of spatial data autocorrelation of soil hardness and defined processes underlying its formation. It has been established that statistically significant phytoindicative scales describe from 6 to 42% of the variability of multidimensional measurements. The acidity of the soil solution mode is of value for the formation of the first coordinate axis and describes the presence in the plant community of steppe plant species, meadow plant species and heliomorphes. The axis marks the conditions determining soil hardness in layers of 0 – 10 cm as compared to those which are below the selected block. The second coordination axis reflects the opposing phenomena in the structure of the soil above and below the level of 25 cm from the surface. The highest value in its formation belongs to ombroclimate scale. The soil aeration scale and the contents of carbonate salts are essential for the formation of the third coordinate axis. Measurement points to such conditions under which the hardness of the soil in layers of 0–5, 15–25 and 40–50 cm is similar to each other, but differs from the hardness in layers 5–15 and 25–40 cm from the surface. In the process of fractionation of hardness variations of the soil under analysis we have established that environmental factors determine the 47 % of the total variability of the data. PCNM-variables describe 2% of the variation of indicators of soil hardness and spatial patterns deterministic environment – 27% of variability of feature. Herewith among the studied environmental factors the most important for the formation of large-scale variation in the spatial variability of hardness are the variability of moisture and thermoclimate. Both large-scale and small-scale spatial variations of soil hardness depend on the vegetation structure, i.e. the presence of trophomorphes of plants: steppe plant species and meadow plant species.
